Headaches & Migraines

Different types of headaches

Tension Headaches: Probably the most common typed of headache and caused by the involuntary sustained contraction of the muscles around the skull and face . Prolonged mental concentration , stress and a variety of other factors may bring on the pain.

Symptoms:  Pain around the  back of the head, upper neck & forehead. it is a steady ache lasting hours to days. Apart from tiredness and mild depression there are no other usual symptoms. Stress headaches can often happen after a period of stress is relieved

Cluster headache:Is a rare form of headache which can be confused with migraine. It often affects smokers and alcoholics in particular.

Symptoms: This is aften a severe intense pain often described as piercing or tearing. It is a continuous pain and is often centred around one eye, spreading down the same side of the face or upwards towards the forehead. The eyes can become red , swollen and weepy. Attacks last from a few minutes to several hours and occur in clusters of up to 8 a day. These clusters can last for 6 to 8 weeks but then there can be no attack for months or even years

Migraine: The cause of migraine headaches is still being investigated. Te pain and other symptoms seem to be related to exaggerated fluctuations in the size of the blood vessels to the brain and its surrounding structures. A period of narrowing causes decreased blood flow, followed by a period of dilation during which the onrushing blood stretches pain sensitive tissues.

Symptoms: There may be flashing lights in one eye, blurring, blind spots or vision distortion. Also tingling in the arms or face and then usually within the hour the headache begins. The pain is described as a pounding pain becoming worse when moving or bending. There can be nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to bright lights and noises. It can last for a few hours to a few days.

Treatment: All the above types of headache pain can be helped with hypnotherapy. However I will only work with a client who has headache pain once a doctors diagnosis for the condition has been confirmed.
